Lund University

Lund University (LUND) is Sweden's strongest comprehensive research university, which is ranked as one of the top 100 in the world. In recent years, the university has been awarded more research funding than any other Swedish full-scale university. In 2009 Lund University received strategic research funding of SEK 715 million from the Swedish Government in order to lead and develop world-leading research in nine different areas over a period of five years. It includes the development of the “Medicon village”, which integrates on a unique place research, innovation and enterprises to cover the entire value chain in people’s health and wellbeing research and innovation.

The Faculty of Medicine at Lund University offers a wealth of research, postgraduate and undergraduate education programmes in medicine, nursing and health. The Faculty encompasses 1544 staff (176 professors; 861 lecturers, research and doctoral students; and 507 technical and administrative staff), 2800 full-time students enrolled in 8 degree programmes and 1100 graduate students. The Faculty consists of six departments that pursue medical research and education in Lund and Malmö. The departments are: experimental medical science, health sciences, clinical sciences (Lund), clinical sciences (Malmö), laboratory medicine (Lund) and laboratory medicine (Malmö).

The Faculty has numerous medical research centres including: Lund University Diabetes Center, Neuronanoscience Research Center, BAGADILICO - research on Parkinson's and Huntington's disease, Centre for Ageing and Supportive Environments, Lund Bioimaging Center and Malmö Cancer Center. The Faculty is responsible for five of the Swedish Government's so-called strategic research areas over a five year period, 2009-2014. These five areas are Epidemiology, Diabetes, Neuroscience, Stem cells and regenerative medicine, and Cancer.

The Öresund region is one of the most dynamic regions in Europe. Highly specialised healthcare, medical engineering industry and successful research and science parks can be found in our immediate neighbourhood. The conditions are therefore optimal for developing, commercialising and applying the knowledge and ideas that our researchers develop. Lund University is behind a large number of significant medical discoveries that have led to improved treatments methods, new drugs and better diagnostics. In a number of cases the findings have resulted in the establishment of biomedical companies. Well-known and well-established innovations from the Faculty of Medicine include: the artificial kidney, the dialysis machine; Non-ionised contrast medium; New ventilator - the Servo ventilator; and Nicotine chewing gum, the world's first nicotine medication, Nicorette. Innovations for the future from the Faculty of Medicine include: vaccine against heart attacks; a drug that speeds up slow labour – Tafoxiparin; Endogenous peptides against bacteria; and New treatment of pre-eclampsia.
