Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS) is the largest university in Lithuania, preparing health specialists. It unites the Veterinary Academy and the Medical Academy. LUHS traditions of studies and scientific work go back to the times of the Faculty of Medicine at Vytautas Magnus University, which was later turned into Kaunas Institute of Medicine. On June 30, 2010, the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania passed a resolution to merge Kaunas University of Medicine (KMU) and the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy (LVA). Now the University is the biggest institution of higher education for biomedical sciences in Lithuania integrating studies, research and clinical practice. In 2014, 7990 students, among them 654 foreign and 260 PhD students, are taking part in 111 study programmes.

LUHS consists of two main academies: the Medical and the Veterinary Academy. There are 7 faculties and 5 research institutes at the University. Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Clinics consists of 39 in-patient departments and is the biggest health care provider in Lithuania. The Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno klinikos is the main basis for medical studies and clinical research at LUHS. LUHS participates in development projects that result in new technologies, augmented scientific research and development as well as renewed and modernized infrastructure of the University.

LUHS collaborates with more than 140 European, American and Asian universities for study and research purposes. The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences is also a member of the World Health Organization (WHO), where it fulfils the role of a collaboration centre for research and training in epidemiology as well as for prevention of cardiovascular and other chronic non-communicable diseases. The HEALTH-TECH CoE will benefit from the LUHS medical research which focus on the functioning mechanisms of living tissues, the influence of lifestyle and environmental factors on health, health economics and health systems research, and clinical research. Research groups carry out projects in various fields, such as cardiology, oncology, neuroscience, endocrinology, nursing etc.
